The Sweatshop is Everywhere... / Der Sweatshop ist überall...

... according to Onion. And because recently I have not done nearly as much sewing as I would like, I thought I'd point you to this gem.
...laut Onion.

Interruption of Normal Service / Unterbrechung

Because I mentioned these photos in a comment on one of the wonderfully thoughtprovoking posts on male pattern boldness I thought I'd put them up here so you can take a little family trip - destination history. Peter wondered why so many of today's celebrities stay boys and girls into their forties while in the golden days of black and white glamour 18-year-olds played worldly wise sophisticated ladies.
My take on this question was the mortal fear baby-boomers had of the kind of adulthood their parents displayed. It seemed to come with a kind of ingrained suburbia and properness. Social roles for everyone, set as tightly as mother's curls. You wanted to scream but you could not, it was so stifling. These social roles went with rigid dress codes and here they are:

My grandparents and aunt in 1921. Granted, those northern European summers can be a bit nippy, but really, leather boots for a six year old?
Six years later - the little boy was to become my father. It seems really warm and everyone has changed into shoes more suitable for the beach, but look my grandfather's apoplectic collar.
And here he is again, this time he is my father. We are on our way to our holiday destination and my father thought fit to don a tie, at least for the car journey. I seem to have been dressed all in white. White shoes, white socks and a white little cotton coat...

... and a white bow. This was no fancy of my mother. It was a must for a proper middle class girl. My bow was nylon, I'm sure, but if you look really hard at the first photo, you can see that my aunt is sporting a giant piece of silk on her head. Apart from the expense of a 5" silk ribbon, you needed to invest lots of time (and in the case of my aunt, a nanny) to drill appropriate behaviour into a little girl - the bow was a sign that this had happened, or at least been attempted. And don't get me started on my father who was subjected to scheduled beatings (scheduled by my grandmother, executed by my grandfather). My grandparents were probably kind people, but they were bent on fulfilling their social roles. All I can say is that I am glad that my mother was determined not to repeat the mistakes of her parents and my father took his cue from her.

And doesn't all this call for a post on the irresistible temptations of Lycra? Would the invention of Lycra a little earlier in the 20th century have changed the course of history? Or at least the way my father was brought up?

Skirt from Knipmode / Knipmode Rock

Rock 8b Knipmode 08/2010Rock 8b Knipmode 08/2010
When I saw this skirt, I somehow liked the line of that flap. Good for breaking up the wide expanses of my belly. On the other hand, I certainly did not want several extra layers of fabric. So made the flap into the waistband.

The material is a very densely woven cotton with a tiny herringbone. I found it in a shop closing. It seems that it was used to encase mattresses. It must be about 30 years old. I was not very careful either in cutting or sewing, because I wanted to see if my alteration worked. I think it did, sort of, but I don't think the skirt is wide enough for cycling (decently). I was surprised to find that the back of the skirt is wider that the front. I did not like that and put the sideseams at the side.

But I love the colour and the facings and pocket. A thinner cotton with a lovely tulip pattern.

Linen dress / Leinenkleid

As promised, here are some pictures of my first attempt of Butterick 4276. I really love those colours and the linen ist incredibly soft. Because it is so soft, I underlined it with white silk organza.

Although I had already taken out some width from the shoulders, there was still too much fabric round my neck.
Butterick 4276
This is how I closed the shoulder seams - by hand. I think I saw a tutorial somewhere that shows how to insert combined neck and arms facings by machine, but I felt too stupid to try it and now I've forgotten where I saw it. I staggered the seam allowances to reduce bulk.
Butterick 4276
All in all this dress is a joy to wear. The combination of linen and organza means it moves nicely and does not wrinkle too much.

Requited Love? / Erwiderte Liebe?

After all the horrors I imagined to be lurking inside the August Knipmode No. 5 blouse, I was quite pleased. There are some issues I need to work on, but I felt I could wear it in public.

Sigrid's attempt had warned be about some drafting issues with the collar, so I did this:
This caused a new problem though. You can see that the markings for the slit to let the tie through start higher than the collar. This got worse once I had attached the ties.
On finding that one tie would go round completely I decided to close the blouse with snaps.
These snaps are on the underside, the plastic one in the picture above holds the tie. And I am now completely of Nancy K's opinion that ties do leave an aftertaste of girl's pinafore.
I was quite happy with the material I chose. A micro fibre with enough stand to hold its own without interfacing, and feeling like washable silk. And I had serging cones in the same shade so I could do a rolled hem. If and when I use this pattern again, I'll use much more interfacing, because I don't want to look this blouse like this version from Knipmode:

Next time I'll finish the armscye with facings, because they will not pucker as much as the bias binding. And I'll gather the collar instead of creating ad hoc pleats, but this micro fibre would have kicked and screamed had I attempted to gather it.

A Fatal Obsession/Eine fatale Besessenheit

Do you know the kind of woman who always picks the wrong man? Her partners cannot commit, they don't know what they want, or if they do, they refuse to talk about it, they sleep around and leave a tearstained wreck behind. But next time round the woman sees a guy, thinks he oozes masculine mystique, until she finds out it is pure poison. You know how it is - and the onion has encapsulated the phenomenon in this hilarious video.

Hot New Relationship Book Warns Women: 'Wake Up! He's A Shapeshifter'
I used to be a bit like that, but consider myself cured now. Now think of my horror, when it happened again the other day. Thank goodness, this time around, it is not a bloke, but a blouse.

(Image/Bild: Sigrid)
My gut reaction: I want to look like that. I ordered the Knipmode issue. Then Sigrid made the blouse and found that the pattern may be faulty. With a tiny remnant of judgement I could see why she was not entirely happy with the pattern. But most of me just drooled over The Blouse. Last night I hardly slept for thinking about The Blouse. I read a little, got drowsy, switched off the light, closed my eyes and instantly it was there before me. Half my stash was turned into The Blouse. Could I add sleeves? Can it turn into a dress? Will I manage to change the pattern so it looks like the line drawing?
Meine erste Reaktion: So will ich aussehen.
But The Blouse is all wrong for me. Years and years ago I made a solemn vow never to attempt princess seams that start in the armscye, because with my small shoulders and relatively big ribcage I found them tricky to fit. And till now I was never even remotely tempted. Small shoulders mean that I may have to change the proportions of the collar. Normally I stay clear of anything with a defined waist, because I don't have one. Again, adapting the pattern for my short waist may wreak havoc with the proportions of the collar. But I want The Blouse regardless.

Summer Dress/Sommerkleid

Another vintage pattern that intrigued me. It had my favorite darts. I have since learned that they are called French darts in English. I wonder whether they have a German name.

This is the second dress I made from this pattern. I'm still not entirely happy with it. I'll show you the first attempt when it comes out of the wash. The fabric is a thin cotton sateen with just enough lycra to have left out the zipper. Considering that I took these photos after a day at work it holds up well enough, I think.

Oh dear, the side seam! I added some width to the back and to the back only so I should not be surprised that the side seam is all over the place. I need that width to keep me fairly decent on the bicycle, but I did not wish to change the silhouette of the original pattern.
I used my ladder as a tripod. The results are not brilliant, but they still give me hope for the upcoming self-stitched September.

Vintage Skirt and Mangle Cloth/ Vintage Rock und Mangeltuch

When I saw this pattern on etsy I was electrified. A kind of bustle created by a simple set of tucks. Having no hips to speak of and only a bit of sway back for a curve made me jump at this pattern. And it has only one pattern piece.

I bought this pattern in a size 8 which was much to small for me. So I flattened the front dart and and added the required width at the front and centre back. And I knew from the start, that I wanted the skirt in my usual knee length.

This skirt is very much a wearable muslin. I used an old mangle cloth looking something like this (minus the stripes). The linen has a curious herringbone weave (or is it normal that you see the pattern from the front, but not from the back?). It is thick and fairly soft so it does not produce accordeon creases, but still the skirt loses a bit of shape during the course of a day. Its next incarnation will be a brown summer wool with a pinkish pinstripe.

I hate waistbands, so I made a facing instead.

This is the facing of the hem. I only show you this, because this pink rayon(?) once weighed down the hem of an incredible cocktail dress of my mothers. It was made by a genius dressmaker my grandmother knew from before WWII.

Weltkrieg kannte.

I think I like this skirt really well. The front looks like a normal A-line skirt, but the hem is gigantic. So I can move, and the skirt moves with me.

Me-Made-May hit me around the middle of the month, so I was much too late for that. But it seemed so much fun. So now I should love to be part of Self-Stitched-September.

'I, nommh of textile eskapade, sign up as a participant of Self-Stitched-September. I endeavour to wear at least two handmade items of clothing every day for the duration of September 2010'.

Two items is almost too easy for me, since practically all my knickers have crawled out from under my serger. So for me the challenge will be to actually blog about my outfits, and to make sure the usual monotony will be relieved somewhat.

The TNT pattern / Das Standard-Schnittmuster

Here I am, all in a giddy and headless swirl about how often I have made a t-shirt from this pattern. Making one is practically instant gratification.

Sea of PomPoms / PomPom-Ozeane

I'm certainly no fashionista (proof: I do not believe in it bags), but I like to look at the fashion weeks. And sometimes I am absolutely thrilled. Diane von Furstenberg did pompoms and they are not the least bit twee.
