Summer Dress/Sommerkleid

Another vintage pattern that intrigued me. It had my favorite darts. I have since learned that they are called French darts in English. I wonder whether they have a German name.

This is the second dress I made from this pattern. I'm still not entirely happy with it. I'll show you the first attempt when it comes out of the wash. The fabric is a thin cotton sateen with just enough lycra to have left out the zipper. Considering that I took these photos after a day at work it holds up well enough, I think.

Oh dear, the side seam! I added some width to the back and to the back only so I should not be surprised that the side seam is all over the place. I need that width to keep me fairly decent on the bicycle, but I did not wish to change the silhouette of the original pattern.
I used my ladder as a tripod. The results are not brilliant, but they still give me hope for the upcoming self-stitched September.

  5. Thank you all!

@Making Changes: Yes, the Sewing Divas are great, I wish they had a tutorial on manipulating a French dart, not just sewing it. But I won't give up.

  7. Hullo. I just yacked on the sewretro about the dart, so I`ll not repeat myself on that one.
But now I have another suggestion, right after appropriate amount of gushing. ADORABLE! I absolutely love the dress and the style. And you chose the perfect pattern to go with the style. Applauses, dearest.
Now, to the side seam. Might I suggest that you draw a line from the very middle of the side to your armpit. And then transfer it to pattern. The dress itself fits rather nicely, I for one could never have told that there´s been alterations to the width to the back. The fit is balanced, looks proportionate. The only thing I would choose to do, is move the side seam to the pattern. That way you are left with a pretty spiffy pattern with which to sew manymanymany more lovely dresses.
